Painting it twice.
Sometimes I get requests to recreate a painting. I’m always nervous about trying to reproduce a piece because I know it won’t turn out exactly the same.
The original version of this piece is an 8x8” on birch panel. This new version is quite a bit larger, and in a different format - 18x36”. Thankfully I could find reference photos for the other half of the mountain! My challenge with this piece was to keep the loose style that is easy to create when working small, but hard to reproduce at a larger size. In order to not get caught up in the details, I took a step back from the canvas. Working from a little further away was what I needed to keep the style loose, and it was a good learning moment for me since I’m hoping toward on larger paintings this year.
The original 8x8” painting - Vermilion.
Bigger and better.
